事實上，邁克爾·傑克遜摘抄來祝福所有人的古老詩句是來源於古印度經典《阿闥婆吠陀》(Atharva Veda)。而"吠陀"是印度最古老的宗教和經典，也是印度最古老的文學遺產，流行於西元前2000年代印度西北部雅利安人遊牧部落中。在吠陀教展成婆羅門教之後，吠陀仍是婆羅門教的經典。印度教因襲婆羅門教，也要求在原則上信奉吠陀，雖並不要求完全恢復古代的吠陀。
"吠陀"一詞原為"知識"和"學問"的意思。《吠陀》是印度最古的詩歌總集，大約形成於西元前1000年左右。《吠陀》經典通稱吠陀文化，在婆羅門教的文化中心時期，他們傳播教育，確定民族文化意識，完全依據《吠陀》經典做為中心思想。所謂《吠陀》經典，也有韋陀、毗陀等等多種譯名。漢文義解，則相當於"智論"或"明論"。換言之，即求了知宇宙人生的智慧。它包括了三部大典：《讚頌》（《曼怛羅》、Mantra，亦稱《Samhita》、《本集》）、《淨行書》（即《梵書》、婆羅哈摩那拏、Brahmana、亦稱《婆羅門書》、《神學書》）、《奧義書》（《優婆尼沙陀》、《優婆尼沙曇》、《秘密書》、《哲學書》）。
《讚頌》有四種，也叫做四"吠陀"：
（1）《梨俱吠陀》（Rig Veda），贊誦。
（2）《阿闥婆吠陀》（Arharva Veda），祈禳。
（3）《姿摩吠陀》（Sama Veda），歌詠。
（4） 《夜柔吠陀》（Yajur Veda），祭祀。
